Serena Stone

Already cited by the illustrious architect Giorgio Vasari in 1568, and mentioned by the great Dante Alighieri in the Inferno (XV, 63), Pietra Serena is a particular variety of gray sandstone. A highly esteemed noble material, it has been used for centuries, especially for the creation of sculptures and ornamental elements in prestigious buildings. In the past, Pietra Serena was most widespread in Tuscany, particularly in the Florence area, and it also became popular in other contexts: the historic buildings of Bologna, for instance, feature splendid thresholds and entire staircases with steps made of this beautifully worked and finished material.

Grain and various colors

Gray Elegance with Natural Shine and Homogeneous Texture

Pietra Serena, in terms of appearance and material, is particularly recognizable for its grain, which ranges from medium-fine to coarse. The texture is homogeneous and is characterized by tiny sparkling dots attributed to small flakes of mica, a mineral named for its shine (the term derives from the Latin “micare,” meaning “to shine”). Finally, the color of our Pietra Serena is elegantly gray.

Workability and Durability

Pietra Serena can be polished with excellent results. Easily workable, it offers good resistance to compression. Due to its sedimentary origin, Pietra Serena beds, formed by the deposition and cementation of ancient desert sands or various types of seabeds, exhibit a characteristic appearance of overlapping horizontal layers.
Usage

Its practical use is a mark of distinction in construction, sculpture, and interior design. Building entrances, window sills, doorways, or decorative elements such as statues, fountains, balustrades, or bas-reliefs: all areas of perfect contextualization where Pietra Serena can effectively replace previous elements, now weakened by time.

The skillful use that another great architect of the past like Filippo Brunelleschi made in numerous buildings such as the Ospedale degli Innocenti, for which Calamini Urbano Srl carried out restoration work, or the Pazzi Chapel in Florence, further testifies to its value. In those cases, it was paired with white plaster to achieve a suggestive bicolor effect of neutral tone, impossible to overlook.
