Contrary to common belief, travertine is not marble. According to proper geological classification, these two materials are distinct, even visually. The former is a sedimentary limestone rock, while the latter is a metamorphic rock formed within the Earth’s crust through a series of mineralogical and structural transformations.

The age of the stone and its specific porosity, along with the incorporation of oxides, result in a material that can exhibit numerous shades, ranging from milky white to walnut, from pink to scarlet red. This characteristic makes it adaptable to various color schemes. Travertine comes in two main types: “thermal,” prevalent especially in central Italy, and that formed by ambient temperature water. The finest travertines are extracted in the plain below Tivoli, particularly in the municipalities of Tivoli and Guidonia, where around thirty quarries are currently in operation. Additionally, it is found in Abruzzo, Tuscany, Umbria, and the Marche region.
